Short Version of the Regional Climate Strategy
Adopted in July 2022, the ECOWAS Regional Climate Strategy aims to strengthen the resilience of West African countries against the impacts of climate change. Although the region accounts for only 1.8% of global GHG emissions, it is among the most vulnerable. The Regional Climate Strategy is grounded in regional solidarity, integrating adaptation, mitigation, and the transition toward low-carbon development.
It aligns with the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda, in coherence with ECOWAS’s energy, agricultural, and forestry policies. Driven by a shared vision of a sustainable and resilient West African community, this strategy mobilizes national and international resources while supporting member states in implementing their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and climate programs.
