Pilot Study on Sectoral Carbon Market Mechanisms – Focus on Morocco & Tunisia
As part of a regional study conducted in the MENA region, this pilot project aimed to assess the feasibility of sectoral carbon market mechanisms, with a particular focus on Morocco and Tunisia. The objective was to identify implementation pathways suited to the regional context and contribute to the development of carbon pricing instruments in developing countries.
The main tasks carried out were:
Conducting an assessment of the current climate policies in both countries, as well as ongoing initiatives related to carbon markets
Conducting an in-depth analysis of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to identify sectors with high potential for integration into a market mechanism
Carrying out feasibility studies for the introduction of sectoral mechanisms in various strategic areas
Developing concrete recommendations to guide the next steps in the development of these instruments, while taking into account the institutional, economic, and technical specificities of each country

This study laid the groundwork for a strategic approach to progressively integrate the carbon market into the low-carbon pathways of Morocco and Tunisia
