The city of Marrakech is integrating urban mobility and sustainability through its innovative project for a high-quality electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, powered by a 750 kW photovoltaic solar power plant connected to the medium-voltage network. This project, financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is implemented in partnership with the Secretary of State for Sustainable Development (SEDD) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Morocco.

Considering the positive economic, social, and environmental impacts generated by the project, particularly in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, creating jobs, improving service quality, and enhancing the international image of the city of Marrakech, ECI has been mandated by the Secretary of State for Sustainable Development (SEDD) in partnership with the UNDP to conduct a feasibility study for the extension of the BRT network from one line to four lines, as well as the expansion of the solar power plant to supply electricity to the BRT system.

ECI has also been tasked with establishing a Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) framework for urban bus transport, specifically for diesel buses, the newly introduced electric BRT system, and the solar photovoltaic power plant. This framework aims to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the BRT system in Marrakech.
