The ECOWAS Commission, with support from the GCCA+ West Africa project implemented by Expertise France under funding from the European Union, has been engaged since 2021 in an inclusive and participatory process for the development of its first Regional Climate Strategy (RCS) for coordinated regional action on climate.
In this context, ECI, as a member of the expert team from the international firm BAASTEL, has been mandated to provide technical assistance for the development of the RCS, particularly in the mitigation chapter. More specifically, the work has consisted of:
- Analysis of conditional and unconditional global mitigation commitments for 2030, categorized by sector for each country, and aggregation of these commitments (2030 NDC regional scenario);
- Conducting a foresight exercise for the mitigation aspect up to 2050, including modeling work to project the impacts of various scenarios in terms of mitigation;
- Conducting a document review on the emissions potential for the Industrial Processes and Product Use sector;
- Introducing the Industrial Processes and Product Use (IPPU) sector into the RCS;
- Participation in the review and validation workshops for the ECOWAS RCS held in Abuja and Accra.
